A Girl Locked in a Tower, a Midnight-Teacup Cabaret
Written by Katharine Sherman
Directed by David Hanzel
Lighting by Matt Carney
Costumes by Noah Brown
This was a devised work based on the poems of Lord Tennyson. A series of 8 reality-bending stories that our shut-in heroine enacts with puppets for her (also) captive doll audience. We see inside the tower and the young girl's mind as she copes with the outside world and her absence from it, and see her journey as she struggles for release.
This was primarily a movement piece wherein a troupe of performers take their cues from the puppet shows a girl performs for her dolls. The show took place on the long, narrow stage of Theatre B at the University of Iowa's New Play Festival 2013.
